The average per capita protein consumption in the Philippines is very low, only 44.1 grams annually. This is primarily due both to the limited income of consumers and the inadequate supply of protein source products such as fish, pork, chicken, eggs, beef, and vegetables. The supply of protein source products from local sources has long been lagging behind the demand for domestic consumption. The reason for this is that expansion of the more traditional animal protein sources such as pork and chicken is severely constrained by the shortage of feed-grains and the strong competition for the use of the grains for direct human consumption. The short-run alternative adopted to solve the problem was to supplement local supply by importing meat and meat... |

A recreation allocation model is developed which efficiently selects recreation areas and degree of development from an array of proposed and existing sites. The model does this by maximizing the difference between gross recreation benefits and travel, investment, management, and site-opportunity costs. The model presented uses the Travel Cost Method for estimating recreation benefits within an operations research framework. The model is applied to selection of potential wilderness areas in Colorado. This example is then extended to show the model's capability in budget analysis and in planning to meet recreation targets. |

In this study a complete survey of all WJAE articles was conducted. The 158 titles that have appeared in the WJAE as of December 1981 are categorized by institutional category, authorship affiliation, and subject category. These results are compared to similar studies concerning the SJAE and AJAE. Our findings indicate that the WJAE has a broad range of contributors and is not dominated by any one institution, author, or group of authors. We feel that these and other interesting results are of general interest to all WJAE readers. |

This paper classifies methods for estimating agricultural output supply responses to price into two broad categories (1) programming and (2) econometric. The latter category is further subdivided into two-stage procedures, directly estimated supply systems and directly estimated single commodity models. In Part 1 the theoretical basis of these methods is considered, while Part 2 explores their strengths, weaknesses and potentials from an empirical standpoint. |

In Malesia there are two species of grasses here tentatively included in Helictotrichon Besser (Gramineae): H. sumatrense Ohwi and H. virescens (Nees ex Steud.) Henr. [inch H. asperum (Munro ex Thw.) Bor and H. junghuhnii (Buse) Henr.]. The delimitation and nomenclature of Helictotrichon, Avenastrum Opiz and Avenula (Dum.) Dum. are discussed. It is proposed to lectotypify Helictotrichon with Avena sempervirens Vill. In the matter of automatic typification of superfluous names Art. 7. 11 is in conflict with Artt. 7. 10 and 63. 3; a correction is proposed. |

In this study a taxonomic revision of the 20 nearctic species of the dorsalis-group is given. For each taxon the following data are presented: references, type material, material examined, diagnostic features, description, detailed drawings of male and female copulatory organs, biology and distribution with distribution maps. A separate key for males and females is presented. One new species is described (oosterbroeki), one is given new status (gnata) and one species is new for the Nearctic region (ramulifera). For the 20 taxa discussed, 37 names are known in literature; four of them are new synonymies, five other synonymies (proposed by Byers, in literis) are published for the first time. The taxonomic information is summarized in a checklist. |

In this revision of the genus Lobophytum 46 valid species are recorded. Owing to my visits to several museums I could examine most type-specimens; of only four holotypes (L. batarum, L. borbonicum, L. lighti and L. rotundum) the depository is unknown to me. One new species, L. hapalolobatum, is described. A list of invalid synonyms and varieties is inserted, and five keys may be helpful in identifying the corals. |

In Malesia the genus Tephrosia is represented by 20 species, native or introduced and naturalized, including 6 subspecies and 5 varieties; 4 species are restricted to Malesia. Two of these species are newly described: T. barbatala and T. elliptica; the former includes one new variety (var. glabra). Two new subspecies and one new variety are distinguished: T. filipes subsp. longifolia, T. purpurea subsp. barbigera, and T. maculata var. elongata. Two taxa are given a new status: T. maculata var. appressepilosa and T. pumila subsp. aldabrensis. Four species, T. dichotoma, T. repentina, T. coarctata, and Kiesera sumatrana are for the first time sunk into synonymy. A key to the taxa, synonymy, and full descriptions with plates and distribution maps are given. |

The six species of Curtia, including a hitherto undescribed species published here, as well as the monotypic genus Hockinia can be distinguished from each other by the seed coat structure. The anticlinal walls and the cuticle provide the most useful information. Curtia tenuifolia appears to be a complex species, but subsp. tenella can be readily separated from this complex by the seed coat structure. Heterostyly has been found in C. tenuifolia subsp. tenuifolia, C. obtusifolia, and Hockinia montana, but differences in seed coat structure can not be correlated with long-, short-, and equal-styled flowers. The differences in seed coat structure, the length of the seeds, and the number of cells per seed plead for maintaining Hockinia (closely related to... |

An annual dynamic model of the primary and derived levels of the U.S. beef industry was estimated by rational distributed lags. Geometric rational lags at the retail level were instrumental in establishing prices in the dressed meat trade and the slaughter and feeder levels. Polynomial rational lags characterized primary inventory supply, which, along with cattle and corn prices, determined the production of fed and nonfed beef. The results suggest that the short- and long-term market behavior in the beef industry is better understood when higher and lower order market interactions are taken into account. |

A survey of the age structure of beach populations of Nephtys species in the British Isles. The basis of population fluctuations. An earlier investigation on Nephtys populations in an estuarine beach has been extended to include other beaches. It has been become apparent that periodic reproductive failure is a common phenomenon, and this explains why many populations are dominated by large, apparently old individuals which have numerous growth lines in the jaws. Reproductive failures are often the result of a failure to spawn, but may also be due to lack of recruitment. |

A taxonomic revision of the fern genus Grammitis Swartz (Grammitidaceae) in New Guinea has been made, in which 64 species belonging to 14 species groups are recognised. Forty-five species are endemic to New Guinea and 21 species are hitherto undescribed. Problems in generic classification are outlined and the morphological characters used in the delimitation and description of the species and species groups are discussed. A bracket key to species and a multi-access key to species groups are provided for identification. For each species there is a complete citation of nomenclature, an illustration of a complete plant together with details of part of a frond, a full description and a summary of habitat, vegetation type and altitude. All of the specimens... |
